About The Position

Mead & Hunt, an award-winning national architecture and engineering firm, is seeking a full-time Construction Services Department Manager. This role will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Construction Services department, focusing on building and developing the team, strengthening client and contractor relationships, growing construction-phase service offerings, and delivering safe, high-quality, profitable work. The manager will be accountable for department performance and the consistent execution of various construction-related services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in construction management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, architectural engineering, architecture, electrical engineering, construction engineering, industrial engineering or a related field AND at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • OR 10 years of progressively responsible experience in construction administration, construction management, engineering, architecture, or related professional services.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, certifications, and relevant construction leadership experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience leading staff and managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, decision-making, and client-management skills.
  • Knowledge of consulting practice, project delivery methods, construction contracts, contractor coordination, scheduling, cost control, change management, quality management, and construction safety.
  • Ability to interpret design and construction documents and communicate effectively with clients, contractors, design professionals, and field staff.
  • Proficiency with common project management, document-control, scheduling, and construction technology platforms.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information, delegate effectively, manage competing priorities, and remain composed in high-pressure situations.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Approximately 25% travel will be required.
  • Ability to perform office-based work for extended periods.
  • Ability to travel to active construction sites.
  • Ability to safely navigate typical construction-site conditions, which may include uneven terrain, ladders or stairs, noise, dust, weather exposure, and required personal protective equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Travel and overnight stays will be necessary.
  • Extended workdays or weekend work may be required to support project activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Department, team, or significant program leadership experience is preferred.
  • Experience in an architecture, engineering, or consulting environment is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, Certified Construction Manager, or other relevant professional credentials.
  • Relevant safety and construction certifications, such as OSHA training, are preferred or may be required based on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide vision and strategic direction for the department.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a department strategic plan.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, market trends, and competitive forces.
  • Coordinate with other departments to integrate construction services.
  • Assume responsibility for department financial performance.
  • Develop annual budgets, forecasts, staffing plans, and business plans.
  • Review project performance and financial reports.
  • Review and approve project budgets, billing, staffing, and expenses.
  • Evaluate investments in personnel, training, and equipment.
  • Lead business development for construction services.
  • Support Market Leaders and Client Managers in business development.
  • Serve as executive sponsor for strategic clients and major pursuits.
  • Lead or support proposals, scope development, fee preparation, and negotiations.
  • Review construction-phase scopes, proposals, and contracts.
  • Represent Mead & Hunt at client meetings and industry events.
  • Collaborate with other Mead & Hunt groups for integrated solutions.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Establish career paths, competency expectations, and training plans.
  • Recruit, mentor, coach, and develop employees.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback.
  • Assign and balance workloads across projects and locations.
  • Review and approve timesheets, expenses, and employee requests.
  • Oversee delivery of construction administration, management, observation, owner’s representative, project controls, commissioning support, startup, and closeout services.
  • Provide project leadership or technical oversight on high-risk assignments.
  • Establish consistent processes for submittals, RFIs, change management, pay applications, schedules, cost reporting, documentation, field reports, punch lists, and closeout.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve department standards, templates, and tools.
  • Coordinate with project managers and design leaders to resolve field issues.
  • Monitor contractor progress, quality, schedule, cost, and compliance.
  • Support constructability reviews, construction packaging, procurement planning, bid evaluations, and contractor selection.
  • Ensure project records are complete, timely, and accurate.
  • Define and communicate department-level decision rights, approval thresholds, and escalation paths.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture.
  • Confirm field staff receive appropriate training and orientation.
  • Implement quality assurance and quality control practices.
  • Identify and escalate risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Promote timely documentation and communication.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, contracts, laws, and standards.
  • Maintain applicable professional licenses and certifications.
  • Stay current on construction practices and technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
