About The Position

Woolpert is seeking a Construction Project Surveyor & Crew Coordinator to join their Survey and Geomatics team in Columbus, Ohio. This role is responsible for overseeing construction-focused survey planning, field data collection, and directing field crews performing layout, staking, and as-built surveys. The Construction Project Surveyor & Crew Coordinator serves as a key link between office and field, ensuring survey operations align with project schedules, construction sequencing, and contractor needs. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, construction-driven environments. Responsibilities include pricing and scoping, coordination with internal teams and external clients, equipment and fleet management, and scheduling field crews to meet aggressive construction timelines. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of construction staking, control establishment, transportation and site development projects, subsurface utility coordination, and field logistics. The candidate should have foundational knowledge of construction survey services, topographic, control/geodetic, transportation, subsurface utility, boundary/ROW determination, and ALTA surveying, technical and logistical aspects of vehicle fleet and equipment management. Applicants must already possess work authorization in the country the job is located, as visa sponsorship is not provided.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D Required
  • Proven experience supporting construction staking, control, and as-built documentation on active jobsites.
  • Proficiency with survey equipment including total stations, GNSS, levels, and data collectors.
  • Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, and field layout interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage crews, schedules, and multiple concurrent construction projects.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with contractors, engineers, and project teams.
  • Proficiency in survey data workflows, including data transfer, processing, and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficient computer skills, including but not limited to data transfer, data processing software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to quickly adapt and respond to industry changes and internal initiatives.
  • Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
  • Mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position.
  • Pass a pre-employment driver’s license background check and maintain a satisfactory driving record, as required by our insurance company.
  • Must successfully pass periodic drug testing as required by company policy.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms, bend and climb and/or balance.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment. For instance, tape measure, cloth / steel tape, machete, hammer, shovel, pick axe.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Must have vision abilities of close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field is advantageous, but not required.
  • Certified Survey Technician certification, OSHA certifications, or successfully passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying exam is desired.
  • Experience in CAD (Civil3D) for pulling points, generating staking files, and creating point databases to support field layout and construction workflows is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate field crews performing construction staking, layout, and as-built surveys for transportation, utilities, structures, and site development projects.
  • Oversee daily field operations to ensure crews are aligned with project schedules, contractor sequencing, and site conditions.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between survey crews, project managers, engineers, and contractors to resolve field issues and maintain production.
  • Develop construction-focused scopes of work, schedules, and cost estimates for survey services.
  • Provide technical input during proposal and planning phases to align survey deliverables with construction requirements.
  • Ensure construction deliverables (staking, control, as-builts) are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Plan and schedule field crews to support active construction sites and evolving project demands.
  • Coordinate mobilization, logistics, and equipment allocation across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Monitor productivity, adjust staffing levels, and reallocate resources as needed to maintain project timelines.
  • Ensure field work meets project tolerances, quality standards, and client expectations.
  • Oversee verification of layout, control, and as-built data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with construction survey operations, including schedule impacts and field rework.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop field staff, including crew chiefs, instrument operators, and technicians.
  • Lead onboarding and training efforts with a focus on construction survey methods and field best practices.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all field staff maintain required safety certifications and adhere to site-specific safety requirements.
  • Reinforce compliance with company standards, OSHA requirements, and project-specific safety plans.
  • Manage survey equipment and fleet to ensure availability, calibration, and readiness for construction operations.
  • Support implementation of efficient workflows using modern survey technologies.
