About The Position

The Capital Projects Management Department at Boston College is responsible for the engineering, planning, documentation, and construction management of the college's Capital Improvement Plan. This plan is divided into an Annual Capital Plan and a Major Construction Plan, encompassing up to 150 ongoing projects annually. The Construction Project Manager (CPM) will report to the Associate Director, Annual Capital Projects, and will oversee capital construction projects supporting the Annual Capital Plan through all stages: planning, design, and construction. This role involves implementing best practices for project delivery, including managing scope, schedule, estimating, budget development, risk management, procurement, contract administration, and cost control. The CPM will collaborate with consultants and Boston College stakeholders, including Facilities Management, to produce design and construction documents. Effective communication with BC Departments and project stakeholders is crucial, utilizing management software like PMWeb for reporting on project schedules, progress, and budget control. The position demands extensive knowledge of construction and project management practices, a strong understanding of building systems (envelope, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm), finishes, and site utilities. Strict adherence to University budgets and schedules is necessary due to the annual budget cycle and academic calendar. The role requires the ability to organize and manage diverse teams, including internal staff, external contractors, and design consultants, and proven experience managing multiple projects with demanding schedules.

Requirements

  • Experience in architecture, engineering or construction management.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in construction, architecture, engineering or related field
  • Experience with financial and project management/control systems, such as PeopleSoft, CAD, and PMWeb.
  • Ability to access all areas of construction sites including climbing ladders to assess conditions and perform inspections of existing facilities.
  • Prepare written and graphic presentations.
  • Experience with or a strong understanding of the unique requirements and challenges of laboratory construction, including specialized equipment, safety protocols, and building codes.
  • Strong knowledge of various project delivery methods including CMR/GMP and Lump sum.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously from planning and design through construction completion with budgets up to $10 million.
  • Current Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License or the willingness to obtain one within one year.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with project management of facilities, renovation and new construction for an institution of higher education or other large owner is preferred.
  • Previous experience as an Owner’s Rep at a higher education academic or institutional organization desired.

Responsibilities

  • Management of capital construction projects supporting the Annual Capital Plan through all phases from planning, design and construction.

  • Maintain quality communications with BC Departments, and project stakeholders, using management software PMWeb to report project schedule, progress and budget control.
  • Organize and manage teams, including internal design and operations staff, external contractors and design consultants.
  • Manage multiple projects with aggressive project schedules.
  • Prepare financial analyses and preliminary total project cost estimates.
  • Establish, track, and manage budget during the course of the project.
