About The Position

The City of Harrisonburg's Public Works' Construction Program Inspector position is a full-time role focused on ensuring the quality and compliance of construction activities within the community. The inspector will monitor and inspect work performed by contractors and private developers, paying close attention to erosion and sediment control, and stormwater management measures. This role involves maintaining detailed records of inspections, progress, permits, and plans. The inspector will also coordinate between the City and contractors, analyze field issues, and make decisions to meet deadlines and resolve construction-related challenges, including deviations from regulations, materials, and other matters within their authority. Additionally, the position may require providing emergency response support for snow and ice operations as directed by the Public Works Director.

Requirements

  • Associate’s/Technical degree with coursework in engineering technology or related field.
  • Minimal experience in engineering or construction work.
  • Some construction coordination or project management experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Commercial Driver's License Class B with air brakes within 6 months of hire date.
  • Possession of current VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification within six months of hire date or as class scheduling permits.
  • Certifications in concrete (ACI), erosion and sediment control (DEQ), and stormwater management (DEQ) within two years of hire date.
  • Completion of VDOT classes for asphalt pavement, soils and aggregate compaction, and pavement markings within two years of hire date.
  • Satisfactory results from alcohol and drug testing as required by the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
  • Satisfactory results from FMCSA Clearinghouse Query.
  • Satisfactory results from DMV record review.
  • Satisfactory results from job-specific physical.
  • Satisfactory results from criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and inspect contractor and private developer construction activities.
  • Ensure quality and compliance with contracts, construction plans, specifications, regulations, standards, and codes.
  • Inspect erosion and sediment control and stormwater management measures.
  • Maintain detailed inspection and progress records, permits, plans, and other related documentation.
  • Coordinate construction activities between the City and contractors.
  • Analyze issues in the field and make decisions to help meet deadlines and resolve daily challenges.
  • Address deviations or errors related to regulations, materials, and other construction matters within the scope of authority.
  • Provide emergency response support for snow and ice operations as needed and determined by the Public Works Director.
