The Construction Materials Testing Technician I provides testing and observation on assigned field projects according to applicable specifications for independent testing laboratories. The role includes preparing, collecting, and testing samples; conducting field observations; and documenting construction activities involving soil, concrete, grout, mortar, and asphalt. The technician must clearly identify, communicate, and document test results and activities. The technician performs tests, inspections, and observations with some supervision; reviews civil and structural plans and specifications; submits daily field reports; reports non-conforming items to project supervision; and maintains and calibrates assigned equipment. The role may include transporting and operating a nuclear density gauge in accordance with the Radiation Safety Program Policy. The technician is expected to understand Proctor Compaction Testing and USCS Soil Classification, and to demonstrate validated competency in field One-Point Proctor testing. This is generally a full-time position. Although the normal schedule is 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, hours regularly change to meet construction schedules and may include night work, weekend rotations, and early mornings. Daily travel to construction sites, generally within 100 miles of the home office, is expected. Short-term out-of-town work, generally under two weeks, is probable; occasional longer assignments may be required with advance notice. Reliable transportation to and from the branch office at all hours may be needed.
