Construction Materials Field Technician
About The Position
Westex Consulting Engineers is hiring Field Technicians for its Construction Materials Testing team in Reno, Nevada. Technicians test soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates at construction sites and in the laboratory to help ensure materials meet project requirements. Certification is not required to apply; the company provides training and support toward NAQTC and ACI certifications. This role offers a potential career path into construction quality assurance and Special Inspector roles for technicians who later earn ICC certifications. The work includes visiting commercial and civil construction projects throughout the Reno area, conducting material tests, handling and delivering samples to the laboratory, documenting results and site conditions, communicating with project stakeholders, and following safety procedures and recognized testing standards. Work schedules can vary with project needs, often begin early, and include some weekends and occasional nights.
Requirements
- Comfort working outdoors and on active construction sites.
- A detail-oriented approach to testing and record-keeping.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
- Dependability and a genuine interest in learning the trade.
- Willingness to study for and pass NAQTC and ACI exams within an agreed timeframe.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in construction, materials testing, or a related trade is preferred.
- NAQTC and ACI certifications are welcome but not required.
Responsibilities
- Sample and test soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates in the field and in the lab.
- Perform concrete testing, including slump, air content, temperature, and cylinder casting, as well as soil compaction and moisture testing.
- Label, handle, and deliver material samples to the lab following proper procedures.
- Document test results and site conditions in accurate, well-organized daily reports.
- Visit commercial and civil construction projects throughout the Reno area.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients.
- Follow safety procedures and recognized testing standards on every job.
- Study for and pass NAQTC and ACI exams within an agreed timeframe.
