About The Position

Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates (HCEA) is seeking a Construction Material Field Technician for their Ashland, VA office. This role is crucial to the success of the organization, working independently and collaboratively on land development and construction projects. The position involves field observations, sampling and testing of various construction materials, and preparing detailed daily logs. Communication with Project Managers or Operations Managers regarding project progress is also a key aspect of the role. HCEA is a multi-disciplined engineering firm with a strong focus on teamwork, ambition, and professional advancement, recognized by Engineering News-Record as a "Top 500 Design Firm in the Nation."

Requirements

• Reliable vehicle for field work, valid driver's license, and satisfactory driving record.
• Ability to meet all pre-employment requirements.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 60-80 pounds (soil and concrete samples, nuclear gauges, other equipment).
• Ability to work in all outdoor climates and mobility over various terrain.
• Attention to detail and quality, while adhering to all safety requirements.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills required.
• Use of company provided tablet and working knowledge of MS Office programs.
• Ability to perform basic math and use measurement tools.
• With training, the ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Nice To Haves

• Experienced technicians with verifiable certifications such as ACI, NICET, WACEL, etc.

Responsibilities

• Field observations at jobsites in the region.
• Sampling and testing of construction materials including soil, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel.
• Preparing accurate daily logs that outline inspections and test results.
• Daily communication with PM or Operations Manager regarding project progress or other pertinent communication by the contractor.
