The Construction Inspector (CI) is a professional on the Planning, Design & Construction (PDC) team within Vanderbilt University’s Facilities Department. The CI serves as a Construction Inspector and Construction Engineering Technician, providing field engineering support for multiple simultaneous construction contracts between the university and private contractors. Projects may include new construction, renovation, demolition, environmental remediation, equipment installation, and energy projects, among others, with project costs ranging from $25,000 to $500 million. The CI coordinates and executes construction-related activities to complete renovation and new construction projects in an organized manner while minimizing disruption to the campus and building occupants. The role involves working independently on most construction management tasks, coordinating with the Construction Management Engineer (CME), and referring difficult, unusual, controversial, or contract- or policy-impacting matters to the CME or Facilities Construction Director. The position requires the ability to work with minimal direction while contributing to a team environment. The CI is part of PDC, which plans, executes, and evaluates university construction and renovation projects; coordinates design, bidding, and project management; works with university stakeholders; and represents the university in dealings with outside vendors, dealers, and contractors. This position reports directly to the Director of Construction and has no supervisory responsibility.
