Nassau County is hiring a Construction Inspector or Senior Construction Inspector, with the level determined by qualifications. The position inspects roadways, bridges, subdivisions, and new development projects for compliance with County standards and codes, applicable FDOT specifications, and Florida stormwater, erosion, and sedimentation-control requirements. It represents the County at job sites, provides guidance and recommendations, conducts or oversees construction-material testing, resolves differences between plans and field conditions, and prepares project documentation. The role also involves communication with contractors, developers, utility companies, property owners, County personnel, other agencies, and the public. Construction Inspectors conduct field and driveway inspections, monitor permitting and construction activities, investigate complaints, coordinate project communications, and may stop work as directed. They review concrete and asphalt mix designs and related test results, monitor paving and concrete placement, check roadway rideability and traffic control, use survey equipment to verify earthwork elevations and grades, inspect drainage and pipes, review bonds, estimates, and as-builts, and help ensure projects comply with ADA standards. They also coordinate utility work and meetings, communicate road closures and safety information, maintain project records, and attend job-related training. The Senior Construction Inspector performs comparable inspection and project oversight duties and additionally plans, schedules, and supervises inspections; monitors the inspection division’s performance and works to improve efficiency and consistency; assists with monthly and yearly activity reports; calculates project material needs and checks receipts and tickets against planned quantities for pay-request evaluation; prepares and submits project narratives, quality-assurance reports, test reports, and other records; and assists with traffic-signal repairs and maintenance as needed. The senior role also supports inspector training and uniform application of standards. Both roles include operating an assigned vehicle and inspection or office equipment, routine office work, regular attendance, and performing related duties as assigned. Employees may be required to work in their current or another role before, during, or after an emergency. The work takes place occasionally indoors and very frequently outdoors, potentially in extreme weather and around machinery, electrical currents, dust, odors, traffic, and noise; underground or confined-space work may be required. The position may be safety-sensitive based on an emergency declaration or operational need.
