About The Position

The Construction Inspector performs complex technical work performing a variety of engineering design and construction inspection for construction projects for specification compliance and related assignments. NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) years of experience in engineering and drafting.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid driver’s license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
  • Thorough knowledge of basic construction and civil engineering principles, practices, techniques, materials, and equipment related to public works and utilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering plans, specifications, and drawings.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering, mathematics, surveying, and drafting.
  • General knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress.
  • Ability to detect errors in construction projects.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prepare technical engineering reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, public and private agency officials, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidate shall obtain and maintain the following certifications within the first 18 months of employment: NCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician, Erosion Control Level II, Work Zone Safety, Confined Space Entry, and Trenching and Shoring.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and participates in computing and drafting of cross-sections, profiles, cuts and files, and grades.
  • Reviews detailed surveys, plans, and specifications for construction projects as assigned; drafts plans, and makes copies of topographic maps.
  • Responsible for Powell bill daily reports, quarterly reports, and maps.
  • Assists with stormwater inventory mapping, search for deed and property ownership.
  • Prepares and reviews bid documents, engineering cost/material estimates, and permit applications for construction projects for compliance with city standards.
  • Inspects all aspects of street construction and resurfacing projects to assure compliance with approved plans and city standards; reviews payment requests for accuracy.
  • Inspects work in progress as well as completed work of contractors on city projects to assure all specifications have been met.
  • Tracks quantities on city projects inspects water and sewer construction projects to assure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Coordinates with other departments and/or contractors on work sites for installing, replacing, and repairing water and sewer lines, manholes, and valves.
  • Inspects water and sewer connections, street construction, sidewalks, driveways, drainage, etc. for final approval in new subdivisions for Iredell County and City of Statesville inspections and Street Department.
  • Helps investigate complaints related to streets, driveways, storm drainage, water and sewer, etc.
  • Keeps daily log of construction progress and work activities; report in verbal and written form to upper management about status of project(s) in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
