This role involves conducting comprehensive daily inspections across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications. The inspector will review and interpret construction documents, prepare detailed daily inspection reports, and verify contractor compliance with various standards. The position also supports special inspections and testing, and may involve tracking time-and-material work and assisting with progress payment requests. Inspections cover a wide range of building construction elements, from demolition to finishes.

Requirements

  • 5 years or more of experience performing inspection of large-scale Public Works type projects.
  • Training in the use of fall protection equipment and harness with lanyard.
  • Confined space awareness certification.
  • Cal/OSHA 30-hour training and certificate, received within the last 4 years, prior to assignment.
  • NFPA 70E certification required for electrical inspectors.
  • Ability to walk extremely long distances during the shift, as this is the primary means of traversing between expansive terminals.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffold, and crawl into areas associated with the work taking place in the terminals.
  • Ability to work day, swing, modified, or night shifts, including weekends, as dictated by the contractor's schedule.
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) required.
  • Clear understanding and interpretation of LA City Building Code and ADA requirements.
  • Good knowledge and ability to inspect large-scale construction of airport and public building facilities, which may include steel and concrete structures, architectural finishes and components, and other construction related to airport terminal operations, ensuring conformance with safety regulations, plans, specifications, and other applicable documents.
  • Experience inspecting demolition and the construction of buildings from start to finish.
  • Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies, ensuring that all aspects of construction meet required standards.
  • Knowledge of project management information software used for inspection and document control (e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam).
  • Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic equipment for contract documents efficiently, including change orders, submittmits, RFIs, and other inspection documents, with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Must pass a background check and obtain a LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
  • Must be able to work on-site at LAWA in accordance with airport access, terminal access, and airfield (pedestrian) access requirements.

  • ICC certifications and Deputy Inspector Licenses are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive daily inspections across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications.
  • Reviews and interprets construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Prepares comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly document the who, what, when, where, and how of all observed construction activities, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Verifies contractor compliance with local jurisdiction requirements, building codes, and LAWA-specific proprietary standards.
  • Supports special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies as needed.
  • May track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities.
  • May assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
  • Performs inspections related to building construction including, but not limited to: clearing, grubbing and demolition of building structures; excavations, trenching and shoring; grade and elevation survey; structural backfill and compaction for underground utilities; structural and nonstructural concrete work; formwork, footings and micropiles; sewer and storm drain inspection; metal stud framing, drywall installation and interior finishes; door and hardware components; and T-bar ceilings, hard lids, and other fire-rated components.
