About The Position

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Field Services Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Construction Inspector I inspects public construction projects to ensure work is completed according to City plans, specifications, and standards. The employee works with contractors, City staff, and the public to address construction-related issues and helps to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and in compliance with applicable requirements.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in construction or a related industry.
  • Knowledge of Construction Plans and Specification Standards.
  • Skill in recording information accurately.
  • Skill in applying construction experience to inspect, evaluate, and coordinate public infrastructure projects.
  • Skill in applying construction knowledge to identify deficiencies and ensure compliance with project standards.
  • Ability to communicate, while using tact and diplomacy, in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and apply knowledge of Construction Plans and Specification Standards to work performed.
  • Ability and willingness to be objective in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to enforce and uphold City Construction Plans and Specification Standards.
  • Ability to determine compliance of building construction with blueprints and written specifications.
  • Ability to inspect construction of paving, storm sewers, and bridges to ensure compliance with City Plans and Specification Standards.
  • Ability to inspect the construction of sanitary sewers to ensure compliance with City Plans and Specification Standards.
  • Ability to inspect construction of water infrastructure to ensure compliance with City Plans and Specification Standards.
  • Complies with all safety policies and practices; promotes a safe work environment; participates in safety meetings; current on completion of safety trainings.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting inspections of public construction projects, including buildings, paving, storm sewers, bridges, sanitary sewers, water lines, driveways, paving cuts, and repairs.
  • Recording inspection information and project-related data.
  • Interpreting and explaining construction plans and specifications related to public sector construction projects.
  • Advising contractors, residents, and workers on issues related to construction projects to ensure compliance with construction plans and specifications.
  • Monitoring work performed and materials used on projects to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Working on a semi-independent basis and referring unusual problems or situations to the assigned Chief Construction Inspector.
  • Following established policies and procedures while completing assigned inspections and related duties.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
