About The Position

Inspects construction of streets, roads, bridges, and drainage projects; reviews and interprets construction plans and specifications; ensures compliance by contractors; ensures that construction has proper alignment and grade, with correct type and quality of materials, and that methods used are in accordance with specifications; enforces safety regulations; directs and takes field samples for testing purposes; operates field survey and testing instruments and equipment; prepares reports; maintains contact with contractors. This position requires 100% on-site work. Works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather; the incumbent will be working around trenches, roadways, manholes, lift stations, storage tanks, etc. Incumbent may be exposed to noise, dust, unpleasant odors, traffic hazards and mechanical hazards from being around construction sites.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of engineering design principles and practices as applied to planning, locations and construction of various types of engineering projects
  • Knowledge of possible defects and flaws in various types of construction and of effective corrective measures
  • Knowledge of codes, regulations and ordinances governing constructions
  • Ability to recognize conditions likely to result in collapse or failure of facilities and structures that are completed or are under construction
  • Ability to explain, interpret and enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially
  • Ability to read, write and do simple mathematical calculations
  • Ability to operate transit, level, calculator, mall, shovel and pick-up truck
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and the public
  • Graduation from high school with at least one (1) years’ experience in construction inspection of all types of Public Works or Highway projects
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Other state valid Driver’s License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered
  • Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver’s license
  • Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test

  • HMAC Training & Certifications: Level-1B Roadway Specialist, SB-102 Field Specialist (Must be obtained within 1-year from date of employment)
  • ACI Training & Certifications: ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician-Grade 1 (Must be obtained within 1-year from date of employment)
  • Construction Inspection Training Certificate to be obtained with in two (2) years
