The Construction Inspector I performs quality assurance inspections on civil engineering and public works projects completed by the City, private developers, and utility companies to ensure compliance with applicable City and industry standards. Projects may include City buildings, plants, utilities, streets, other infrastructure, and non-City utilities permitted in public rights of way or utility easements. The inspector coordinates construction activities with contractors and the project team, working with the Construction Supervisor and Project Manager, and attends meetings to provide status updates, identify problem areas, and recommend resolutions. Additional work includes monitoring quality control testing and coordinating quality assurance testing for placed materials such as concrete, asphalt, and underground utility embedment or backfill; updating record drawings as needed; investigating customer complaints; and maintaining contract document files. Depending on workload, the position may be assigned to horizontal projects, vertical projects, or non-City utility right-of-way inspections. The inspector is expected to exercise initiative and independent judgment to provide quality assurance services in an assigned geographical area, use appropriate safety equipment, and follow approved safety procedures. Supervision is provided by a Construction Supervisor or Right of Way Manager through on-site spot checks, meetings, and reports concerning project status, problems, and results. Evening, weekend, and overtime work may be required. This is an FLSA nonexempt classification.
