About The Position

The Multnomah County Department of Community Services, Transportation Division is looking for a full-time Construction Inspector - Bridges (Engineering Technician 3). This role involves working primarily as a construction inspector in partnership with County Project Managers on capital improvement projects for the County’s six Willamette River bridges. The position ensures that complex rehabilitation and enhancement projects for transportation infrastructure are completed correctly, efficiently, and to the highest quality. Responsibilities include working on electrical, mechanical, and structural rehabilitation of large movable bridges, and contributing to transformative roadway projects. The role involves working in teams to solve critical construction challenges and ensuring contractors adhere to agreed-upon plans. Inspectors may lead other project inspectors, assigning work and scheduling to ensure adequate coverage. Many projects are funded with federal dollars, requiring meticulous attention to detail and documentation. The work environment is flexible and team-oriented, requiring exceptional communication, analytical, and organizational skills.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to an Associate degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering, surveying technology, construction management, or related field (In lieu of a degree, we will consider equivalent years of qualifying training and/or experience)
  • Three (3) to six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in public works bridge and roadway construction inspection
  • Valid driver license

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction inspection of bridge and/or road projects, which may include reinforced concrete and structural steel installation, shop fabrication, paint, surveys, grading, surfacing, drainage and others.
  • Keep construction inspection records and prepare reports.
  • Lead the project quality and quantity documentation and closeout process.
  • Mentor and coach less experienced staff.
  • Coordinate and schedule day-to-day inspections, facilitate communication between the parties involved in the delivery of capital projects including County staff, consultant engineers, and construction contractors.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on construction standards, practices, laws and regulations.
  • Review project plans and specifications.
  • Plan and administer multiple smaller projects or parts of a larger project.
  • Coordinate project safety and quality assurance functions.
  • Assist in developing standards and procedures.
