IEC Construction Field Support Manager

Michael Baker InternationalNew York, NY
Onsite

About The Position

Michael Baker International's Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators, and safety experts. As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects. Michael Baker International is seeking a Construction Field Support Manager to provide project-level field insight in support of the Independent Engineering Consultant’s (IEC) oversight role. This position supports Project Managers by conducting field observations, validating reported progress against actual site conditions, identifying emerging risks, and translating construction activities into clear, actionable oversight findings. The role does not direct construction work, manage contractors, or duplicate PMC/CCM responsibilities. Rather, it provides an independent, field-informed perspective to support schedule, risk, interface, and readiness assessments. This role requires onsite field work in New York City and its surrounding areas.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience supporting heavy civil, transit, infrastructure, station, tunnel, utility, or major public works construction projects
  • Associate’s degree in Construction Management or a related discipline
  • Solid understanding of construction sequencing, temporary works, access constraints, utility coordination, and interface management
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, schedules, phasing plans, and work plans
  • Experience identifying and documenting field conditions with potential schedule, cost, or constructability impacts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with basic construction scheduling software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and well‑supported observations
  • Ability to engage effectively with field personnel, contractors, and site representatives while delivering professional reporting to project managers and leadership
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Availability to attend job site meetings and construction activities during weekdays, with occasional night and weekend work as required

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or a related discipline
  • NICET Level III, CCM certification, and/or an engineering background
  • Experience with design‑build and design‑bid‑build delivery on transit, transportation, or public‑private partnership projects

  • Familiarity with large public infrastructure delivery environments, including MTA, NYCT, or similar agencies
  • Working knowledge of risk management processes and their impact on construction field activities
  • Experience in public agency project delivery environments and understanding of oversight expectations

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular field visits to gain first‑hand visibility into construction progress, work sequencing, site logistics, and interface readiness
  • Validate reported progress, schedules, and milestone commitments through direct comparison with real‑time field conditions
  • Proactively identify and escalate emerging issues related to constructability, access, utilities, third‑party coordination, and predecessor/successor handoffs
  • Provide IEC Project Managers with clear, concise, and objective field intelligence on site readiness, near‑term risks, and execution constraints
  • Evaluate cross‑contract and cross‑discipline interfaces to anticipate impacts to downstream activities and overall project execution
  • Prepare well‑documented, professional field observation narratives suitable for IEC oversight reporting and internal management review
