Construction Engineering Intern
About The Position
The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking an engineering student who wants hands-on experience in transportation construction. The intern will support construction projects by reviewing plans and specifications, evaluating field conditions, conducting materials testing, and assisting with inspection and documentation. The role provides experience with contract administration, construction procedures, and quality assurance, while collaborating with engineers, inspectors, and contractors to help ensure projects meet plans, applicable standards, specifications, and safety requirements.
Requirements
- Completion of at least two years in civil, construction, materials, or transportation engineering, or in an engineering management curriculum at an accredited four-year college or university.
- Eligibility for junior status upon return to school.
Responsibilities
- Assist with transportation construction projects by reviewing construction plans and specifications.
- Evaluate field conditions.
- Perform materials testing to verify compliance with project requirements.
- Support construction inspection and documentation.
- Monitor contractor activities.
- Gain experience with contract administration, construction procedures, and quality assurance practices.
- Collaborate with engineers, inspectors, and contractors to help ensure projects are completed in accordance with plans, applicable standards, specifications, and safety requirements.
