About The Position

The Development Engineering Team, a division of the City's Community and Economic Development Department, is recruiting for a Construction Engineering Inspector within the Construction Engineering section of the division. The Construction Engineering Inspector will help to ensure that private development and Capital Improvement Projects are designed, engineered, and constructed in accordance with the City's Codes and Standards, and provide a safe and enjoyable place to live and work. Requirements

• 2 years college-level coursework in construction management, engineering, or closely related field.
• Minimum 2 years journey-level development engineering (below-ground infrastructure) construction or inspection experience.
• Or 4 years of relevant education and experience.
• Valid drivers’ license.
• Successful passing of a required driving record check.
• Successful passing of a required background check.

Responsibilities

• Review construction work in progress and construction materials to ensure compliance with specifications, plans and standards, and inspect construction to ensure compliance with City and other agencies’ requirements.
• Inspect a variety of Public Works construction installation projects, including capital improvement projects, and development projects for conformance with specifications, City ordinances and regulations. Including but not limited to water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer systems, streets, street lighting, traffic signal systems, electrical systems, and telephone cables as assigned.
• Examine construction site grades and provide for test of construction materials such as sand, gravel, concrete pour, and aggregates.
• Assess and test water mains and fire hydrants.
• Inspect trenching, placing and backfilling for the transformer wells, junction boxes, street light foundations, poles and installation of underground cables.
• Ensure project work conducted within the public right-of-way complies with approved traffic control.
• Prepare field notes, diaries, and as-built drawings using electronic devices and resources.
• Coordinate with design engineer, contractor, plan reviewer, manufacturer, and/or supplier to resolve design changes, errors, or deficiencies.
• Provide information to the general public on construction methods, materials, and specifications and permits.
• Research and respond to complaints.
• Prepare and maintain various records and reports concerning assigned projects, job status and progress, and work activities.
• Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
• Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
• Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
• Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
• Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
• Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
