Construction Crew Leader
About The Position
The City of Wilmington is looking for a Construction Crew Leader to join their Streets Maintenance team. The work directly impacts the safety and accessibility of the community by repairing potholes, damaged pavement, and maintaining sidewalks, curbs, and public rights-of-way. The role involves working alongside experienced professionals with opportunities for hands-on training, mentorship, CDL development, and career growth into leadership roles. The position serves as a leader to construction/street crews by planning work methods and procedures, setting up work sites, ensuring work zone safety, managing traffic control, observing hazards, following procedures, and supervising employees. Other duties include training subordinates, operating various types of equipment, and performing preventive maintenance. This is a physically active, outdoor career for individuals who enjoy meaningful work, teamwork, and seeing the results of their efforts in the community. Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum three (3) years of related heavy equipment experience.
- Selected applicants will be required to perform a heavy machinery skills test.
- Current Class B CDL.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including hurricanes, snow, and ice storms.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and lift heavy objects.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying materials and equipment.
- Exposure to traffic and active work zones.

Responsibilities
- Assigns daily tasks, monitors work quality, and ensures the crew adheres to all safety and traffic control protocols.
- Directs the setting up of traffic control around flooded areas and repairs road damage caused by flooding or damaged pipes.
- Repairs potholes, damaged pavements, and maintains sidewalks, curbs, and public rights-of-way.
- Operates light, medium, and heavy machinery (e.g., dump trucks, vac con, sweeper truck, excavators) for pipe installation, traffic control setup, cave-in repairs, BMP area maintenance and construction, and mechanical digging and cleaning of ditches.
- Screens and stockpiles soil and debris.
- Performs operational support by maintaining buildings, assisting in storm preparation and cleanup, attending safety meetings and training, communicating with the public, and maintaining equipment.
- Documents project progress and maintains environmental standards to comply with regulations.
- Coaches subordinate workers, leads safety tailgates, and assists with hiring and performance evaluations.
