Construction Cost Estimator

Amentum•Scoville, ID
•$130,000 - $170,000

About The Position

Amentum is seeking a Construction Cost Estimator to support its Spent Fuel Handling Project (SFHP). The estimator prepares independent cost estimates for proposed change orders and evaluates relevant specifications, drawings, contract documents, and prior proposals. The role applies construction estimating principles and industry practices to produce accurate estimates under general supervision, while developing expertise in the contract terms for the supported project. The position works with Project Managers, Engineers, scheduling, Project Controls, and Risk teams to develop take-offs and production-based estimates, identify scope gaps or creep, support negotiations, and align estimates with construction schedules and project risks. The estimator maintains cost data and estimating standards, reviews estimate variances and lessons learned, and performs peer reviews. Estimate documentation includes a Basis of Estimate narrative explaining scope, assumptions, and relevant project information, followed by variance analysis when an estimate falls outside the target threshold.

Requirements

  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel.
  • At least 4 years of experience; education may substitute for some experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization; U.S. citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
  • Experience preparing cost estimates on behalf of a general contractor using estimating tools such as Excel spreadsheets, WinEst, or other estimating software.
  • Ability to communicate clearly through Basis of Estimate narratives, variance analysis reports, and in-person presentations to all levels of the project team.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Accounting, or a related field is highly preferred.

  • Analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, contract agreements, and prior change order proposals.
  • Develop subject-matter expertise in the contract language for the supported contract.
  • Apply construction and estimating principles, theories, concepts, and industry practices to produce accurate cost estimates.
  • Consult with Project Managers and Engineers to formulate quality take-offs.
  • Identify scope creep and scope gaps in proposed change orders.
  • Assist with price negotiations in coordination with Project Managers and Project Controls management.
  • Collaborate with the scheduling team to develop production-based bottom-up estimates and align estimates with construction schedules.
  • Accumulate, evaluate, and document historical cost data and construction means and methods to maintain current estimating standards and databases.
  • Review completed estimates and perform variance analysis to assess accuracy and capture lessons learned.
  • Support costing of Risk Registers and coordinate with the Risk team to align risk items with the project risk profile.
  • Perform detailed peer reviews of estimates prepared by other team members.
