The Maintenance Operations Division is seeking a qualified Construction & Maintenance Equipment Operator with asphalt experience to excavate, install, maintain, and repair City facilities and roadways. This role involves operating specialized motorized construction and maintenance equipment, executing instructions, and taking responsibility for safe equipment operation. The position requires knowledge of operating procedures, equipment operation, and the ability to drive heavy trucks for equipment transport. Typical interactions include engineering personnel and employees from other City departments to discuss job details and utility locations. This position reports to the Street Paving Crew Chief.

Requirements

  • One-year experience in heavy equipment operation with maintenance OR completion of a recognized course in construction and maintenance equipment operation, including practical operating experience and instruction in mechanical principles and general construction and maintenance procedures.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
  • Current Washington State Commercial Class A driver's license with the Air Brake restriction removed.
  • Full driver abstract.
  • Any relevant certifications regarding heavy equipment operation (e.g., Graduation cert from a training facility).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating Asphalt Paving rollers (1 ton, 3 ton, and 8 ton, both steel & rubber tire).
  • Experience operating Backhoes in regard to paving.
  • Experience operating mechanical and regenerative mobile sweepers.
  • Experience driving truck and trailer with equipment loaded.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to dealing with all issues and people fairly, consistently, and equitably.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.
  • Good work history and positive attendance.
  • Ability to be flexible within a fast-paced team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate backhoe in Right-of-Way (ROW) for street paving and restoration work.
  • Operate rollers (1-ton, 3-ton, 8-ton steel wheel, 8-ton rubber tire) for major asphalt paving, with knowledge of rolling patterns.
  • Operate front-end loaders to move materials, equipment, and supplies, and to load dump trucks.
  • Operate mobile sweepers on pavement grinding projects.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and clean equipment, including checking oil, water, and tire pressure, and washing off dirt and grease.
  • Inspect job assignments for overhead obstructions and hazardous conditions.
  • Drive trucks and truck/trailer combinations to and from job sites or to move materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensure safety measures are observed during material loading and unloading.
  • May act in a lead capacity at job sites where equipment operation is the primary activity.
  • Function as a working member of the team.
  • Document daily activities, inspections, and accomplishments.
  • Support department goals in promoting race, diversity, and social justice.
