About The Position
The Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) was created in July 2025 and, once operational, will strengthen Alberta’s policing model and complement existing law enforcement agencies. As a newly established organization, the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) offers a unique opportunity to help shape Alberta's newest police service. ASPS is building the governance frameworks, systems, policies, and professional standards that will support a modern, evidence-informed, and operationally effective public safety organization dedicated to serving Albertans. This position may initially be filled in a civilian capacity and is expected to transition to a sworn police officer role. Joining Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) means becoming part of a team that is building something new. You will have the opportunity to help shape a modern provincial police service, serve communities across Alberta, work alongside dedicated public safety professionals, contribute to innovative and evolving approaches to policing, and build a meaningful career focused on service, leadership, and community impact. As a Constable with ASPS, you will deliver frontline policing services that help protect people, strengthen communities, and support public confidence in policing. Working across Alberta's diverse communities, you will respond to calls for service, conduct investigations, support victims, maintain public safety, and collaborate with community partners to address public safety concerns. In addition to frontline responsibilities, successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of Alberta's newest police service while helping establish a culture grounded in professionalism, accountability, respect, and service.
Requirements
- Previous policing experience is an asset and may be required as determined by ASPS recruitment standards and operational requirements.
- Valid appointment as a Police Officer under the Police Act (Alberta), or eligibility to obtain prior to commencement of employment.
- Completion of all training and certification requirements under Provincial Policing Standards.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound operational decisions under pressure, including application of use-of-force authorities.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with members of the public, victims, witnesses, and fellow officers.
- Detailed understanding of applicable legislation, including but not limited to the Criminal Code of Canada, Police Act (Alberta), Alberta Traffic Safety Act, Provincial Policing Standards, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and thorough records and documentation to support prosecution and accountability.
- Knowledge and ability to advance principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in policing.
- Sound judgement, decision-making abilities, and problem-solving skills in dynamic operational environments.
- Maintenance of fitness for duty as defined by ASPS standards, including valid firearms qualification.
- Eligible for appointment as a Police Officer in the Province of Alberta in accordance with the Police Act (Alberta).
- Must obtain and maintain the relevant level of security clearance prior to and throughout employment with ASPS.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
- Applicants will be subject to professional standards checks with their previous policing employer(s)
- Prior to an offer of employment, applicants will be subject to enhanced pre-screening including enhanced background and reference checks.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
- Must maintain fitness for duty and all required certifications as defined by Provincial Policing Standards and ASPS standards throughout employment.
- Must comply with ASPS use-of-force policy and all applicable workplace policies on and off duty.
