About The Position

Conservation Research Specialists (CRS) at Assiniboine Park Conservancy (APC) are integral to the Conservation and Research team, responsible for implementing the organization's goals. This role involves conducting high-quality research, both individually and collaboratively, to support conservation and animal welfare decisions. The CRS will manage the conservation laboratory at Assiniboine Park Zoo, focusing on generating genetic and genomic data, particularly using environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques. Key aspects of the role include contributing to grant-funding proposals, conducting research in the zoo, lab, and field, and effectively communicating progress and results to diverse stakeholders. This encompasses researching funding opportunities, developing and implementing internal research projects, maintaining rigorous data collection standards, facilitating external scientific research, and disseminating conservation messages. Specific duties also involve generating and interpreting genetic and genomic data, managing laboratory functions, and assisting with permit applications and reporting.

Requirements

  • Minimum MSc in biological science or related field with the completion of a thesis at this level or higher
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Must be able to obtain a Firearms Possession and Acquisition License
  • Experience in experimental design and scientific research methodologies
  • Experience with laboratory methods needed to generate molecular ecology data (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR amplification, quality control, and data management)
  • Experience managing large genetic and/or genomic datasets

Responsibilities

  • Implement the goals of Assiniboine Park Conservancy as part of the Conservation and Research team.
  • Conduct high quality research that supports conservation and animal welfare decisions within the Zoo and at field sites.
  • Ensure the smooth and safe operations of the conservation laboratory at Assiniboine Park Zoo.
  • Generate and interpret genetic and genomic data to support conservation and research goals, with a particular emphasis on environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques.
  • Maintain high standards relating to data collection, archiving, analysis, and communication in accordance with academic community standards, scientific rigor, and zoo policies and procedures.
  • Assist in obtaining grants to support conservation and research projects, including researching grant funding opportunities, preparing funding proposals, and assisting in reporting communicating outcomes.
  • Assist student research projects where necessary.
  • Conduct data analysis and present results in a variety of formats when required.
  • Manage sample databases and assist in permit applications and reporting relating to the laboratory.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of research in the zoo by external scientists.
  • Implement conservation programs where directed.
  • Perform related duties as required.
