About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hiring a Conservation Police Sergeant for the Office of Law Enforcement. This position will serve as the Department of Natural Resource's liaison to Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Illinois Terrorism Task Force, and the Illinois Law Enforcement Activation System by coordinating all disaster response and homeland security functions, attend IEMA briefings and ITTF Law Enforcement Committee meetings, update IDNR Continuity of Operations Plan and the Continuity of Government Plan, conduct trainings and maintain IDNR's portion of the GROOVE computer program for IEMA to obtain personnel and equipment resources, develop Marine response teams for water rescue and homeland security missions and serve as liaison with other DNR offices' response coordinators. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of a bachelor's degree, preferably with major coursework in either law enforcement, social justice, or the social sciences, or in a related conservation field such as forestry or natural resource management, biological and physical sciences; equivalent training or related experience as a law enforcement officer or related technical conservation resource/public lands management experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Requires successful completion of an approved training program such as the Illinois Conservation Police Officer Training Program which includes successful completion of the Illinois Basic Police Training Program.
  • Three years law enforcement experience as a Conservation Police Officer.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver's license
  • Requires ability to travel in performance of duties with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires ability to swim
  • Requires ability to meet agency minimum proficiency for firearms qualifications.
  • Ability to work under adverse tactical conditions, exposed to outdoor temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of outdoor recreational and commercial equipment used for fishing, trapping, hunting, boating and snowmobiling.
  • Working knowledge of outdoor recreational participant's habits, methods and techniques relative to various state and federal conservation laws.
  • Working knowledge of investigations, arrests, confiscation and handling of evidence, and prosecution procedures.
  • Working knowledge of supervisory techniques and practices.
  • Two (2) years of experience enforcing all applicable Illinois Revised Statutes, federal and administrative laws.
  • Two (2) years of experience promoting safety education programs and other divisional programs and services at a district level.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction of the OLE (Office of Law Enforcement) Boating Law Administrative Lieutenant, as a sworn law enforcement officer, plans, coordinates and evaluates the IDNR disaster response and homeland security programs.
  • Serves as IDNR's liaison on the Illinois Terrorism Task Force.
  • Assists the Training Lieutenant in the training of officers.
  • Develops Marine response teams for floods, hurricanes, swift water rescue and homeland security missions.
  • Assists the Boating Law Administrator and the Supply Lieutenant to ensure projects, demands assistance is rendered based on the needs of the Department.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
