About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is seeking Conservation/Historic Preservation Workers (CW’s) for temporary seasonal positions, not exceeding six months, at various locations throughout Illinois, including Sahara Woods. These roles involve performing routine maintenance and janitorial duties for site buildings and public use areas, such as groundskeeping, cleaning shelters, shower houses, and privies, and managing trash and debris. Workers will also be responsible for operating and performing routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including cleaning and repairing hand tools, and changing fluids and filters. Additionally, CW’s will assist in habitat management and various hunting programs. Some positions may also involve site interpretation. The IDNR is charged with preserving, protecting, and promoting Illinois' natural and cultural resources, overseeing a wide range of sites from water and wildlife to parks and historic locations. The Office of Land Management, under which this role falls, manages nearly 400 land parcels and promotes outdoor recreation, conservation, and preservation, including activities like hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and interpretive programming at Historic Sites.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of eight years of elementary school
  • Completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history
  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Elementary knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment essential to grounds and building maintenance
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and trucks
  • Must be able to carry up to 60 pounds
  • Must be able to walk over rough, broken terrain

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance and janitorial duties of site buildings and public use areas
  • Assists in area preparation and operation for the various hunting seasons
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles
  • Assists in the inspection of public use areas for public safety and hazards
  • Explains site rules and regulations to users
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
