Gulf Islands Conservation Crew Member - Pensacola, FL LOCALS ONLY
About The Position
American Conservation Experience (ACE) is seeking 3 Local Corps Members to serve 8 weeks (300 Hours) at Gulf Islands National Seashore in Pensacola, FL. The crew will focus on invasive plant species management, including herbicide use and physical removal of specific grasses and beach vitex. Members will work alongside park volunteers, biologists, and National Park Service staff, gaining hands-on experience and career insights. This role offers practical field skills and readiness for employment in conservation fields. The position requires dedication and willingness to work long hours in adverse weather conditions within the diverse environment of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
- Able and willing to work in a group
- Able and willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Capable of hiking moderate distances in somewhat rough terrain during inclement weather conditions
- Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check
- Capable of performing physically demanding labor on environmental and conservation projects for 8 hours a day
- Expect to hike extended distances on rough terrain carrying up to 40 lbs for daily tasks
- Willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions such as temperatures ranging up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, high winds, intense sunshine, and rain
- Must have own housing and transportation
- Must have personal vehicles necessary throughout the member's term of service to get to and from the job meeting point everyday
Nice To Haves
- Experience using herbicide or pesticide
- Knowledge of local invasive and native plant species
- Strong desire to enter the conservation field as a natural resource professional
- Experience or interest in volunteering in local communities
Responsibilities
- Utilizing herbicide in various ways (backpack foliar sprayer, hand sprayer, daubers, etc.)
- Hand pulling vegetation
- Using hand tools to remove vegetation
- Working with tools and equipment such as rakes, hand saws, loppers, and brush-cutters
- Participating in Volunteer Service Projects to make up for any lost time (up to 20 hours)
