About The Position

The Everett High School Connections program provides an in-house alternative setting for students to develop and maintain academic, social, and emotional progress. The program aims to help students develop coping strategies for eventual reintegration into general education classrooms, enabling them to graduate with the skills necessary for post-secondary education and career opportunities. The Connections Program utilizes a three-pronged approach: Academic, Therapeutic, and Behavioral. The Teacher promotes a positive learning environment and delivers instruction to students (grades 9-12) whose educational needs are primarily the result of significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. The teacher is responsible for assessing each student's individual academic and behavioral needs.

Requirements

  • Current MA teaching license in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, and SEI endorsement.
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching students with social/emotional/behavioral challenges.
  • Ability to assess and teach academic skills (grades 9-12) in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Skilled at working with other professionals, such as counselors, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists, as resources for planning and delivery of individualized success plans.
  • Written and oral communication skills sufficient to perform essential functions.
  • Ability to attend Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training provided by the district in August.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses students' academic and behavioral needs.
  • Identifies students' individual needs and collaborates with Connections’ team to create individual success plans.
  • Uses approved EHS Science Department curriculum to plan instruction and assess student work using the current Massachusetts Biology, Chemistry, and Physics frameworks in conjunction with supporting individual success plans, including following school-wide common assessment and diagnostic testing cycles, for students in grades 9-12.
  • Implements individually designed success plans, coordinating with behavior/clinical staff, parents, when available, and other related services staff.
  • Communicates with students during instruction and interpersonal interaction using language structure, tone, and body language that promotes positive student behavior, conflict resolution and problem solving, effective management of power struggles, and applies proactive strategies for management of escalating behavior.
  • Confers frequently with consulting education staff, students, and, as appropriate, with parents concerning both academic and behavioral progress or concerns of all assigned students.
  • Collaborates with Science Director (9-12) and Science department colleagues to review lesson plans, content, assessments, relevant data, and Tier II or III interventions to inform teaching practice.
