About The Position

The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, is hiring a Congressional Reporter to cover the House of Representatives, with a focus on healthcare and the ability to extend coverage to the Senate. The role requires familiarity and comfort writing about a broad range of policies. The person filling this role will be responsible for a mix of spot news stories, regular briefs, and features. A successful candidate will have the ability to build sources that can help provide daily scoops to be used across The Hill’s platforms, including newsletters. The position emphasizes writing unique, compelling, and informative news stories that grab readers' attention. Collaboration with the Congress, White House, and campaign teams, as well as various policy beats, is key.

Requirements

  • Degree in journalism or a related field.
  • Previous reporting experience in a metro or national media environment is preferred.
  • Good instincts for understanding reader interests.
  • Ability to produce error-free, clean journalism on a tight timetable.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule and assignments as business needs evolve.

  • Real-time analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the House team to provide full coverage of the House of Representatives, including committee hearings, press conferences, and floor votes.
  • Recognizing news immediately as it happens and identifying trend stories that affect the political scene.
  • Writing a mix of short and longer news briefs and features for The Hill’s website and newspaper.
  • Writing stories on healthcare, focusing on legislative efforts and administration actions.
  • Ability to appear on television or speak at events to discuss complex policies and political fights in a digestible manner.
