About The Position

The Cone/Sign Truck Driver is responsible for safely operating a 26-foot Ford F550 cone truck and a 19-foot Ford F350 sign truck to support traffic control operations. This role requires strict adherence to safety procedures, proper execution of engineered Traffic Control Plans, and consistent communication with work crew to ensure safe and efficient work-zone setup and removal.

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 25 (younger candidates may be considered with verifiable experience).
  • At least one (1) year of experience operating large vehicles (20-30 foot trucks such as box, flatbed, delivery, or moving trucks).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow Traffic Control Plans.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a coordinated crew.
  • Must successfully complete company vehicle safety training.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
  • Ability to climb in/out of trucks safely and lift/move 50 pounds routinely.
  • Ability to perform visual and manual vehicle inspections.
  • Employees are responsible for providing their own closed-toe shoes (safety shoes preferred), a plain white or grey undershirt with no logos or writing to be worn beneath the high-visibility shirt, and khaki pants or shorts.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate assigned vehicles in diverse roadway, traffic, and weather conditions.
  • Maintain full awareness of vehicle dimensions, blind spots, and turning radius.
  • Drive in a manner that protects crew members working from the rear platform.
  • Comply with all traffic laws, company safety policies, and work-zone regulations.
  • Read, understand, and follow all approved Traffic Control Plans, including lane closures, tapers, detours, and cone placement and patterns.
  • Coordinate with rear and platform crew to ensure accurate and safe deployment and retrieval of cones and signs.
  • Adjust driving speed and vehicle positioning to maintain crew safety and work-zone accuracy.
  • Prioritize situational safety of all personnel, motorists, and pedestrians at all times.
  • Maintain constant situational awareness of surrounding traffic and roadway hazards.
  • Use all required safety lighting, flashers, and warning systems.
  • Communicate clearly with crew regarding vehicle movements, hazards, and changes to the work area.
  • Perform required blind-spot and safety checks before any vehicle movement.
  • Perform and document pre-trip, in-service, and post-trip inspections, including checking fluid levels, inspecting for damage, confirming proper function of lights and safety equipment, and inspecting tires.
  • Report any defects or safety concerns immediately to manager.
  • Complete required daily vehicle inspection logs.
  • Report incidents, near‑misses, hazards, or equipment issues promptly.
  • Record any vehicle damage or mechanical concerns.
