About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with producing/finishing concrete areas and assisting with various Public Works projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving concrete or brick work
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Prepares work areas for concrete surface; measures/marks area to be formed; levels area and sets grade; removes debris.
  • Sets up forms for concrete area; determines amount of concrete required for project.
  • Monitors pouring of cement into forms; spreads concrete into sections of forms; shakes down poured cement; levels cement to appropriate depth and consistency; shapes surfaces; molds expansion joints.
  • Finishes surfaces of poured concrete to specified textures; removes rough or defective spots; patches holes.
  • Breaks old concrete surfaces and removes materials; repairs concrete surfaces and potholes.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in department projects which may include a dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, tamping machine, cement mixer, air compressor, jackhammer, chainsaw, concrete saw, sledgehammer, mallet, shovel, rake, axe, mechanic tools, concrete tools, concrete forms, etc.
  • Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
  • Performs manual work functions associated with department projects (which may include lifting/moving heavy materials, shoveling materials, picking up debris/litter, placing signage, etc.).
  • Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (such as inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.); monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Gathers appropriate equipment, tools, materials and supplies for use at work sites; initiates requests for additional materials; transports materials to job sites.
  • Receives, prepares and/or completes various forms, reports, work orders, maps, or other documentation; processes and forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service and information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
  • May perform the duties of supervisor in absence of same, which may include supervising, reviewing work and maintaining standards; provides assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
