About The Position

The COMSEC Engineer provides engineering, administration, and operational support for enterprise communications supporting Department of Energy (DOE) classified and unclassified networks. The successful candidate will ensure accountability of controlled cryptographic items (CCI), cryptographic keying material, and secure communications equipment while maintaining compliance with applicable policies.

Requirements

2 years with Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. Or 6 years of experience of directly related experience with HS Diploma/equivalent
Experience serving as a COMSEC Custodian.
Experience administering encrypted network devices.
Experience managing cryptographic key material and COMSEC accountability.
Experience supporting classified network environments and communications infrastructure.
Strong troubleshooting skills for encrypted communications systems.
Ability to travel between government facilities as required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be a US Citizen.
Active TS/SCI or Q/SCI security clearance.

Nice To Haves

Minimum 5 years of experience supporting COMSEC operations within a federal government environment.
Experience supporting Department of Energy classified networks.
Experience with enterprise network engineering.
Experience with CISCO routing and switching.
Knowledge of secure voice, satellite communications, tactical communications, and IP networking.
Experience developing COMSEC Standard Operating Procedures.
Familiarity with Risk Management Framework (RMF), NIST 800-series publications, CNSS policies, and DOE cyber security directives.

Responsibilities

Configure, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot TACLANE network encryption devices supporting enterprise and classified networks.
Perform remote and local administration of encryption devices including: Firmware upgrades, Software updates, Password and PIN management, IP configuration, Peer routing, Network integration, Cryptographic key loading and activation.
Implement, distribute, inventory, audit, and destroy cryptographic keys using approved COMSEC procedures.
Manage cryptographic key expiration schedules and ensure continuous operational readiness.
Prepare and maintain COMSEC documentation including: SOPs, Appointment memorandums, Audit records, Inventory documentation, Compliance reports, Configuration management records.
Support security inspections by ensuring proper storage, grounding, accountability, safeguarding, and configuration management of classified equipment.
Coordinate with Special Security Officers (SSOs), Information System Security Managers (ISSMs), Information System Security Officers (ISSOs), and government stakeholders regarding access authorizations and secure communications.
Coordinate with external government agencies and mission partners to ensure interoperability of secure communications systems.
Participate in system upgrades, modernization efforts, and engineering initiatives supporting secure communications infrastructure.
