About The Position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has multiple openings for a Computer Systems Engineer 2 in Berkeley, CA. This role involves designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining production quality software for the ESnet network, including visualization, measurement and analysis using Google Cloud Platform, and network inventory, configuration, and services database. The engineer will participate in project teams, develop software from user stories and specifications, recommend and lead software improvements, and troubleshoot complex problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field followed by 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in job offered or in a related occupation.
  • Alternatively, a Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field and 3 years of experience in the job offered or in a related occupation.
  • Demonstrated experience in Python, Javascript, or Java.
  • Demonstrated experience working with cloud technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience with Automation tools and frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in Time series data collection and analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in Statistics and statistical modelling.
  • Demonstrated experience in Typescript, React.js, d3.js, node.js, PostgreSQL, Go, Rust, or C/C++.
  • Demonstrated experience in Design and operation of Elasticsearch Clusters, PostgreSQL, and Clickhouse.
  • Demonstrated experience with Google Cloud Platform (Provisioning and operating containers, VMs, and other resources in GCP or Apache Beam) or Amazon Web Services.
  • Demonstrated experience in a UNIX/Linux development environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with APIs such as SOAP and REST.
  • Demonstrated experience with Git and Github.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain production quality software underlying the current and next generation ESnet network, including: visualization; measurement and analysis using the Google Cloud Platform; and network inventory, configuration, and services database.
  • Participate on project teams to successfully develop and complete project scope, on time and within project budgets.
  • Use current development technologies and programming, independently write software from user stories, specifications and designs.
  • Recommend and lead implementation and deployment efforts for small projects and/or software improvements that enhance reliability, stability, usability, performance and security.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
