About The Position

Battelle’s Advanced Microsystem Solutions group is seeking an early-career Computer Engineer to support the analysis and modeling of complex cyber-physical systems. The role brings together electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, and related disciplines to address complex government and industrial challenges. Systems may include embedded electronics, unmanned systems, satellites, and advanced microelectronics. The engineer applies electrical and computer engineering fundamentals to systems engineering activities, including system decomposition, interface and requirements analysis, model development, technical data analysis, and system risk assessment. Working with experienced technical staff and multidisciplinary teams, the engineer will progressively take on responsibility for system analysis, modeling, documentation, and technical deliverables. The position is based at Battelle’s Columbus, Ohio offices and requires regular access to Battelle facilities and laboratory environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline with 0–3 years of relevant experience, or a graduate degree in a related engineering discipline.
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical systems, digital electronics, computer architecture, embedded systems, and hardware-software interfaces.
  • Ability to interpret engineering documentation, including system architecture diagrams, specifications, interface descriptions, schematics, and test results.
  • Experience developing software in Python through coursework, research, internships, projects, or professional experience, including object-oriented and modular programming.
  • Experience with software development practices such as version control, package and dependency management, virtual environments, debugging, and automated testing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills, with the ability to learn unfamiliar technical domains.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework, research, internships, or project experience involving embedded systems, cyber-physical systems, robotics, autonomous systems, avionics, automotive systems, control systems, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, C/C++, or similar engineering analysis or programming languages.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics, laboratory instrumentation, hardware testing, system integration, or troubleshooting.
  • Exposure to systems engineering activities such as system modeling, SysML, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), requirements development, integration, verification, or validation.
  • Exposure to cybersecurity, systems security engineering, threat modeling, vulnerability analysis, or technical risk assessment.
  • Active DoD security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and decompose cyber-physical systems to identify components, interfaces, functions, dependencies, and system behavior.
  • Develop system models and support requirements, interface, and technical risk analyses using available engineering evidence.
  • Apply electrical and computer engineering fundamentals to analyze interactions among hardware, software, firmware, communications, sensors, and physical processes.
  • Use scripting, engineering analysis, data-processing methods, and AI-assisted tools, including large language models, to organize, interpret, and evaluate technical information.
  • Document technical findings, assumptions, evidence, and information gaps while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Flexible compressed work schedule for most employees, with every other Friday off.
  • Hybrid work flexibility, with a model allowing 60% in-office and 40% remote, subject to team and position needs.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage with wellness incentives and benefits, plus optional supplemental benefits.
  • Coverage and support for partners, gender-affirming care, and family formation.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan; for most employees, Battelle contributes 5% whether or not the employee contributes and matches employee contributions on top of that.
  • Tuition assistance for higher education.
