About The Position

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Examination Design Projects subdivision is looking for an experienced engineer to join our team developing precision mechatronic examination systems for inspecting irradiated fuel from the Navy's submarines and aircraft carriers and experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). We are tasked with (1) developing new examination systems for three new facilities dedicated to processing and testing spent nuclear fuel and ATR specimens and (2) major system upgrades needed to continue examinations at our current test facility until the new facilities are deployed. As an engineer in the Examination Design Projects subdivision, you will play a vital role in architecting, designing, and deploying the custom software solution aspects of our control systems. Our control systems typically focus on X, Y, Z axis motion control, data acquisition and processing, and database design with high value placed on developing systems that optimize lifecycle management. Your specific tasks will include a mix of hands-on work in the laboratory environment where systems are designed and tested as well as office-based work to develop design documentation and author software code. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical and electrical engineers, test sponsors, and operations personnel at Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) to deliver cutting-edge solutions to the challenges associated with examining spent nuclear fuel and performing irradiations testing.
