The Role We have an opportunity for an engineer to join Thornton Tomasetti's Applied Science team. You will perform essential work for our clients utilizing commercial and bespoke finite element analysis (FEA) software to solve their real-world challenges, with a strong focus on advanced FEA. In addition, you will contribute to the development of custom pre- and post-processing tools that enhance how client's interface with these FEA tools and interpret results. You will work in a collaborative environment that will challenge you intellectually and grow your career path through learning a suite of bespoke and commercial software, while expanding your software development capabilities, and sharpening your command of solid and fluid mechanics, and nonlinear dynamics. You will be a key technical contributor to a combination of our work with defense, infrastructure, and/or energy-related clients. This role is intended to be fluid in the nature of client work; we seek potential applicants that are excited about learning something new and being able to pivot into new areas as opportunities arise. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in structural or mechanical engineering - or equivalent, with a track record of academic achievement.
  • Coursework in FEM/FEA, structural dynamics, and mechanics of materials are expected.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience in engineering mechanics, structural dynamics, and FEA.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, R, C++
  • This position is expected to work on US government projects in some capacity.
  • As part of the US government contract requirement, all project staff must be able to secure US security clearance.
  • US security clearance requires the applicant to be a US citizen.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced analysis and research on engineering and scientific problems, using a combination of engineering level tools and finite element analysis (FEA) to assess the vulnerability of structures to a variety of extreme loads.
  • Design engineering solutions to protect structures against the effects of extreme loads and investigate root causes of structural failures.
  • Work within a team of professionals to address these wide ranges of problems.
  • Manage your individual tasks and responsibilities by working with team members to produce meaningful and innovative solutions.
