Computational Biology, Research Engineer Intern
About The Position
MantleBio's mission is to advance software for life science research to help people live longer, healthier lives. The company aims to bridge the gap between biological data and cutting-edge technology by building modern data engineering software for the biotech industry. Founded in 2023, MantleBio is rapidly growing and backed by Y-Combinator, having recently raised a seed round. The founding team has extensive experience in building large-scale data infrastructure for biotech. The company is seeking a driven computational biologist who thrives in fast-paced environments to join their team as an early member and the first intern. This role will play a key part in the development of MantleBio, involving close collaboration with teammates to define and implement bioinformatics workflows on the Mantle platform, and working with the product team to influence product direction. There will be an opportunity to explore new applications for leveraging Mantle’s technology in biology research, and the intern will report directly to the CEO.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience developing algorithms, pipelines, or software for life science research
- Proficiency with the Python programming language
- Experience in collaborative interdisciplinary work (e.g., working on a research project with multiple labs, developing an open source library, creating a bioinformatics pipeline for other members of your team, designing your lab’s data management processes)
- Strong communication ability (e.g., being a TA, creating educational material or documentation, teaching coworkers to use new tools or methods, writing articles, presenting research)
Nice To Haves
- Experience working on bioinformatic data pipelines (e.g. Airflow, Nextflow, Snakemake)
- Experience working in the biotech industry
- Experience with software infrastructure tools: AWS, Docker, Relational Databases
- Experience with analysis languages: R, Shell scripting
- Experience applying statistics or machine learning

- Work closely with teammates to define and implement bioinformatics workflows on the Mantle platform

- Salary: 8.5k - 10k per month
- 4 days a week in person
