About The Position

This role involves a hybrid of computational, data, and cyberinfrastructure (CI) dominated fields, including bioinformatics, geological information services (GIS), data analytics, and computational chemistry. The position applies computational, computer science, data science, and cyber infrastructure (CI) research and development principles, combined with relevant domain science knowledge, to conduct research and technology integration and development. Responsibilities encompass research, design, development, analysis, operation, and support of high-performance computing (HPC) and data science research, software, tools, and hardware resources. The role includes developing data algorithms, performing computations, statistical analyses, and interpreting and reporting research findings. This specialty is for positions primarily focused on research, utilizing computational and data science technology as a tool to achieve research objectives.

This position provides direct supervision to professionals or skilled technical employees and acts as an advisor to the unit and administration. It involves analyzing and resolving problems, interpreting policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management), and demonstrating solid subject matter knowledge. Judgment is exercised within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate actions. The role supervises staff to ensure accountability and stewardship of departmental resources (operational, financial, and human) in alignment with departmental goals and objectives.

Specifically, this role applies computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge, to oversee a team of research and technical staff engaged in highly complex HPC / Data / CI research, technology, and software development. Assignments are received as objectives with defined goals or processes. Direction is provided to staff according to established policies and management guidance to achieve research and technology goals. Priority setting and research and technology workflow analysis are key functions. Recommendations for HPC / Data / CI research, development, and technology programs and initiatives are reviewed and approved.
