About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Revenue is hiring an Examiner to conduct on-site and in-office reviews of taxpayer documentation. The role helps ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations and provides taxpayers with education specific to their tax obligations. After reviewing records, the Examiner prepares work papers to help taxpayers voluntarily report any existing liabilities to the State. This is a 100% in-office position based in Lincoln or Omaha, Nebraska. The department does not sponsor STEM Optional Practical Training or non-immigrant work visas for this position.

Requirements

• Post-high-school education or training in bookkeeping, accounting, or mathematics and at least two years of related experience, or an associate’s degree in finance or accounting.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
• Knowledge of financial and accounting records and principles.
• Intermediate working knowledge of Word and Excel.
• Math skills.
• Communication skills.
• Analytical abilities.
• Research abilities.
• Ability to travel to a limited extent, including extended hours.

Nice To Haves

• At least six hours in accounting.
• Work experience in federal or state taxation.

Responsibilities

• Conduct on-site and/or in-office reviews to ensure compliance.
• Prepare work papers or spreadsheets to document work.
• Contact taxpayers to request records or information and explain processes and requirements.
• Respond to taxpayer requests for information and explanations.
• Document relevant facts, information, results, and recommendations through reports and databases.
• Discuss findings with Revenue professionals to resolve issues or make recommendations.
