About The Position

JFS is seeking a dynamic and experienced Community & Volunteer Engagement Manager to lead volunteer engagement efforts within our Immigration and Refugee Services Division. We are looking for someone who is ready to take initiative in building and strengthening community partnerships. This is an exciting opportunity for a mission-driven professional who is passionate about supporting immigrant communities, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing the volunteer experience across our programs. The overall goal is to better integrate volunteer skillsets in order to increase the overall capacity of our department. The Community and Volunteer Engagement Manager plays a critical role by working closely with interns, volunteers, community members, and immigration and refugee services staff. This position reports directly to the Director of Program Operations and partners closely with JFS’s Advancement Division, including the agency’s central Volunteer Engagement team.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a nonprofit setting.
  • Must have a valid CA driver's license, insurance, a reliable personal vehicle, and a willingness to travel off-site.
  • Higher Education Degree.
  • Bicultural/bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • 2-3 years of program management skills.
  • 2-3 years of experience working directly with interns and volunteers in a management capacity.
  • Experience managing a program budget and allocating resources strategically.
  • Direct supervisory experience (staff, interns, etc.).
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and/or collaborating across departments.
  • Experience tracking and reporting program outcomes to leadership.
  • Ability to analyze volunteer/community participation data and translate insights into strategy.
  • Experience cultivating partnerships with community organizations, schools, or local agencies.
  • Experience building volunteer engagement frameworks that support long-term sustainability.
  • Experience working with immigrant and refugee community.
  • Experience working with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage external relationships with professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow through.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship-building abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative and commitment to high-quality service.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Comfort using Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other virtual platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective systems to recruit, screen, orient, train, supervise, support, evaluate, and recognize volunteers.
  • Conduct volunteer screening interviews and facilitate volunteer training and orientations.
  • Collaborate with JFS Community & Volunteer Engagement team to onboard new volunteers.
  • Maintain consistent communication with volunteers to ensure a positive experience, and address concerns or barriers as they arise.
  • Partner with JFS CVE team for volunteer appreciation events.
  • Collect, track, and submit monthly volunteer statistics to the JFS CVE Department.
  • Collaborate with the Immigration Services Team to assess volunteer needs and place volunteers in appropriate roles.
  • Coordinate and manage delegations of law students and/or attorneys that volunteer with JFS for short period of time.
  • Work with each of our programs to develop meaningful volunteer opportunities that increase overall capacity.
  • Create and implement systems that allow us to retain and keep volunteers engaged.
  • Engage actively in the community to build strategic relationships that strengthen volunteer pipelines and program visibility.
  • Design and implement outreach strategies to increase awareness of internship and volunteer opportunities.
  • Conduct outreach events and represent JFS at community presentations, tabling events, and collaborative meetings.
  • Conduct intern outreach in law schools and undergraduate institutions.
  • Support with social media task to promote immigration and refugee services volunteer opportunities or information to the community.
  • Support programs with other program outreach activities.
  • Ensure staff across the immigration and refugee resettlement programs clearly understand the volunteer coordination process.
  • Communicate and reinforce clear guidelines for submitting volunteer requests, including required notice and role specifications.
  • Set and uphold boundaries when requests fall outside established expectations (e.g., last‑minute or inappropriate volunteer asks).
  • Provide training, tools, and ongoing support to staff to ensure understanding of the volunteer program’s workflow.
  • Build strong internal relationships to promote shared ownership of volunteer engagement across departments.
  • Address misconceptions or unrealistic expectations and guide staff toward collaborative, feasible solutions.
  • Participate in training seminars, online courses, and shadowing opportunities with immigration attorneys and DOJ-accredited representatives to deepen program knowledge.
  • As capacity allows support with additional tasks assigned to support our clients and programs.
