About The Position

The Part-Time Community Service Officer (CSO) I is a non-sworn, civilian position within the Superior Police Department (SPD) designed as a temporary, part-time employment opportunity or paid internship program for college students from a wide range of academic backgrounds. This role provides practical, hands-on experience in public service and law enforcement support while enhancing SPD's operational capacity. Part-Time CSOs handle non-emergency calls for service, assist with parking enforcement, provide administrative support, and engage with the community through outreach initiatives. The position is intended to foster professional development, broaden perspectives, and strengthen community connections through diverse educational and life experiences. The program is open to students enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree, regardless of field of study.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college or university program leading to an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree in any field of study.
  • No prior law enforcement experience required; training will be provided.
  • Must have valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • General familiarity with public service concepts and community engagement principles.
  • Basic understanding of municipal ordinances and traffic laws.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency in computers and standard office software.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the public and department staff.
  • Maintain composure and professionalism in varied public interactions.
  • Follow established procedures and supervisor instructions.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Perform physical tasks, including standing or walking for extended periods, lifting moderate weights, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver's license and insurance or be able to provide transportation as approved by supervisor.
  • Must pass post job offer drug screen and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to non-criminal, non-emergency calls for service such as lost/found property, minor traffic accidents, and matter-of-record reports.
  • Enforce parking regulations by patrolling assigned areas, issuing citations, and testifying in court as necessary.
  • Assist in animal control response, including capturing stray animals and coordinating with animal shelters.
  • Conduct routine patrols of parks, business districts, and residential neighborhoods to observe and report safety concerns.
  • Provide community outreach and crime prevention services through public education programs, presentations, and special events.
  • Support administrative functions, including data entry, report writing, and record management.
  • Assist with property and evidence handling, ensuring compliance with chain-of-custody and department policy.
  • Maintain and operate department equipment and vehicles in a state of readiness.
  • Support special events, parades, and community functions through traffic and crowd control.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
