About The Position

SUMMARY: The City of Edgewater is a city of approximately 5,500 residents nestled between the cities of Denver, Wheat Ridge, and Lakewood. We are looking for team members that share our enthusiasm and pride in the Edgewater community. The City of Edgewater is seeking a full-time Community Service Officer (CSO). The CSO position serves as support to numerous functions within the Police Department (PD). While there is no prior related work experience required, a CSO may be trained in a variety of general policies and procedures to serve the wide array of assignments within the PD. A CSO will be expected to be an active participant in community engagement opportunities throughout the City of Edgewater. Once trained, employees must be able to perform with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment. Work is required outside of regular business hours and includes evenings and weekends. Depending on a particular assignment, a CSO may be required to wear a uniform.

Requirements

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Submit and pass a CJIS compliance pre-employment background check that may include a polygraph test, psychological suitability exam, and drug screen.
  • High School Diploma
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the operation of a personal computer along with basic Microsoft Office Suite 365.
  • Use of telephone, calculator, fax machine, and photocopier.
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills to maintain effective working relationships with the public, elected officials, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Effective audio-visual skills and perception needed for making observations, reading, writing, and communicating with others.
  • The incumbent may make occasional trips to external locations experiencing exposure to weather elements and temperatures, construction site risks, and automobile travel.
  • Ability to lift and carry items such as office supplies and equipment, up to 50 pounds, on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to participate in and respond to routine conversation in person or via telephone, and distinguish telephone, printers, computers, and other auditory tones

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to speak, read, and write Spanish fluently is highly preferable.
  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Handles non-emergency calls for service including walk-ins and field contacts.
  • Acts as the Code Enforcement liaison for the PD and assists the Code Enforcement Officer in conveying information and explaining violations to the general public.
  • Assists in preparing documents for court cases and testifies in court as a witness or complainant.
  • Patrols the City to be available to assist motorists or residents in need of non-safety law enforcement-related services.
  • Participates in a variety of community engagement opportunities to enhance a positive police/community partnership.
  • Takes reports of crimes and accidents from witnesses, victims, and other involved parties; assists with the collection and preservation of evidentiary material at a crime scene or in conjunction with follow-up interviews with victims, witnesses or other sources having information.
  • Performs front desk reception and administrative duties; acts as a courier in the delivery of materials, supplies, and equipment as directed; explains the operations of the PD, and provides tours of the facility.
  • Assists with informational meetings and briefings.
  • Assists with the safe storage and inventory of evidence/property stored in the PD's evidence storage room.
  • Upholds City and PD policies and procedures as well as applicable laws.
  • Supports team members in their area of responsibility as needed.
  • Participates in staff meetings and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Communicates effectively, both in writing and orally, to convey the philosophy and mission of the City to citizens, employees, other jurisdictions, and peers.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief of Police.
