About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Community and Family Services Worker for a temporary fixed-term contract position. This role focuses on assessing client eligibility for social benefits, referring clients to appropriate social services, and assisting them in accessing community resources such as legal, medical, financial assistance, housing, employment, and transportation. The position also involves facilitating various programs, spiritual formation activities, and organizing development opportunities for youth, children, and families within a ministry unit.

Requirements

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications for position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • College Certificate or Diploma of two academic years.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Current Safe Food Handlers certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Three (3) years of prior related experience, including experience working with children and youth.
  • Good computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Understanding of individuals from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to coach and motivate volunteers.
  • Self-starter who requires minimal supervision.
  • Ability to represent the local Salvation Army within the community.
  • A primary commitment to Jesus Christ and a passion for youth and families.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work with and relate to children and youth.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Nice To Haves

  • An emphasis in Biblical Studies or Youth Ministries is an asset.
  • Musical abilities would be an asset.
  • Valid provincial Driver’s License may be required for some of the roles for use of Salvation Army program vehicle; an original copy of a current Driver’s Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the creation and promotion of programs for children, youth, and families within the Ministry Unit (MU) to serve Community and Family Services (CFS) clients.
  • Coordinate and maintain programs relevant to children, youth, and families within the Corps and the broader community.
  • Contribute to the spiritual development of children, youth, and families through mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling Christian attitudes and behaviors.
  • Support the development of new ministries to foster the spiritual growth of children and youth.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of worship services, outreach, and discipleship programs.
  • Plan events to promote integrated mission, connecting youth and families from the community with the Corps.
  • Maintain statistics related to youth programming and provide them to the administrative assistant for recording.
  • Represent The Salvation Army on relevant community youth committees.
  • Provide administrative support and coordinate with community partners to identify local youth and family resources.
  • Assist families with accessing services like the food bank and clothing bank.
  • Attend and/or transport children to/from camps and outside activities as needed.
  • Follow up with children/youth who participate in The Salvation Army camp programs.
  • Fundraise for youth and family events.
  • Attend Corps Council Meetings.
  • Assist with recruiting volunteers for events and activities, providing necessary support, resources, and supplies.
  • Oversee youth leaders/volunteers and ensure ongoing volunteer training.
  • Implement policies and procedures for Youth Ministries in collaboration with the Corps Officer/Community Ministries Officer.
  • Perform administrative tasks supporting program objectives in collaboration with the Administrative Assistant.
  • Attend youth networking and community meetings as required by the Corps Officer/Community Ministries Officer.
  • Actively participate in meetings with the Corps Officer/Community Ministries Officer, including PEAC.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Discharge responsibilities in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement and code of conduct.
  • Maintain the department annual budget in collaboration with the Corps Officer/Community Ministries Officer.
