About The Position

The Suffolk County Department of Social Services is seeking Community Service Workers. This role involves providing information to individuals or groups concerning services offered by public or private agencies, assisting applicants in filling out forms for services and explaining procedures, and making routine field visits to gather documentation and obtain information regarding an applicant's eligibility. Workers also assist clients in locating housing by interviewing landlords and brokers, transporting clients to view prospective housing, discussing financial arrangements, and helping clients obtain relocation allowances. They support professional social service workers in evaluating day care and foster care homes through collateral visits to schools and other agencies, maintain case plans by providing supportive home visits to clients, and provide transportation for clients in conjunction with agency service delivery. This is a provisional appointment, which is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or has fewer than three candidates. To become permanent, the provisionally appointed employee must take the next examination for the position, and the appointment is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates.
