About The Position

The Community Service Specialist (CSS) position supports campus safety operations by patrolling campus access areas to promote a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and contractors. During periods of reduced campus activity, the position provides additional public safety, facility security, and community support services in coordination with the CSULB Police Department. This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma and six months of related experience required.
  • Possession of a California Driver’s License required.
  • Successful completion of a livescan background check required.
  • Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
  • Ability to learn and apply procedures and regulations related to campus security, public safety, and library operations.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals, including students, faculty, staff, visitors, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, tact, and discretion when handling sensitive situations and confidential information.
  • Ability to detect and appropriately respond to potential hazards or criminal activity, accurately recall incidents, and take effective action to resolve parking and traffic issues.
  • Strong written communication skills and ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate incident reports.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.

  • Assisting with UAS mission planning, equipment maintenance, data management, documentation, training, and providing aerial support for emergency management, public safety operations, inspections, special events, and other authorized departmental functions.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and direct pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic in high-volume areas of campus to promote safe movement throughout the campus environment.
  • Act as a visible safety presence at designated crossing locations and assist students, faculty, staff, visitors, contractors, and delivery personnel with navigating temporary traffic patterns, detours, and restricted access areas.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders including contractors, personnel, campus departments, and CSULB Police Department regarding traffic and safety concerns.
  • Immediately notify CSULB PD of hazards, unsafe conditions, collisions, emergencies, or incidents requiring police response.
  • Patrol campus facilities and surrounding areas on foot to protect campus community members and visitors from hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, unsafe conditions, and other public safety concerns.
  • Assist in the enforcement of campus rules and regulations.
  • Notify the CSULB Police Department of incidents requiring police services.
  • Write incident reports documenting activities and observations that do not require formal police investigation.
  • Check, open, and secure campus facilities and assist with monitoring, coordinating, and testing alarm systems as assigned.
  • Provide support and assistance to the CSULB Police Department and other campus departments as needed.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response training and take action during emergencies as trained and directed.
  • Meet with supervisors, campus partners, and project stakeholders regarding operational safety concerns, traffic management, and campus support needs.
  • Assist with safety monitoring during campus events, construction activities, and other operational assignments.
  • Support the Department’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, CSU policy, and departmental procedures. Responsibilities may include operating department-authorized drones when appropriately certified, assisting with mission planning, equipment maintenance, data management, documentation, training, and providing aerial support for emergency management, public safety operations, inspections, special events, and other authorized departmental functions.
  • Provide general information, directions, and assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Assist with the physical logistics for campus events, emergencies, and operational activities as assigned.
  • Provide safety escorts for students, faculty, and staff when needed.
  • Serve as a professional and customer service-oriented representative of the CSULB Police Department at campus events and daily interactions.
  • Support campus safety initiatives and promote a welcoming and safe campus environment.
