About The Position

The City of Rochester is seeking applications for a Part-time Community Service Officer position within the Rochester Police Department. This role is designed for individuals enrolled in a Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice program who are currently or will be eligible for Peace Officer licensing in Minnesota within the next two years. Community Service Officers perform general duty civilian public safety work, including protecting life and property, maintaining order, preventing crimes, and enforcing laws and ordinances. This position generally involves 20 or 30 hours per week, with 10-hour shifts, and the department is supportive of academic schedules. A 6-month probationary period applies.

Requirements

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED
Be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed an accredited Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or similar program earning a 2- or 4-year degree
Possess a valid driver's license

Be currently or will be eligible to be licensed in the state of Minnesota as Peace Officers within the next two years

Responsibilities

Perform a support function to the police department’s patrol division
Respond to and handle non-emergency calls for service
Enforce parking violations
Interview victims and witnesses in the investigation of non-emergency calls
Collect evidence from crime scenes
Write detailed police reports
Provide traffic direction at special events, accidents, and other incidents as requested
Explain police, animal or parking control procedures to the public
