About The Position

New York Edge is seeking a Community School Director (CSD) to establish a strong leadership presence within a school building throughout the academic year. This role is central to the Community Schools strategy, which aims to integrate social services into schools by organizing resources and fostering collaborative leadership among principals, parents, teachers, and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). The CSD will play a key role in improving academic performance through a holistic approach and strong partnerships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in urban education or community organizing.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with youth & adolescents in New York City.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, manage priorities and workflow, while maintaining a positive, patient and calm demeanor, and establishing a positive team spirit.
  • Strong understanding of New York City and New York State education requirements in an urban setting.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills with proven ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals both in person, virtually and over the phone, applying tact and discretion.
  • Ability to articulate outcome requirements and provide necessary resources and support.
  • Ability to de-escalate potentially risky or difficult situations.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Must be able to be in person.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for a Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, or Social Work.
  • At least 18.0 credit hours from an accredited college or university in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring a safe and compliant environment for youth, meeting all organizational, DOE, DOH, funder, and labor law requirements.
  • Advising the principal and coordinating the work of various partners within the school, aligning their efforts with school faculty, including organizing CBO provider meetings.
  • Collaborating with school leadership to maintain a focus on results, track progress, and ensure data-driven decision-making.
  • Recruiting, supervising, and ensuring staff meet high qualification standards for Community Schools and New York Edge.
  • Organizing and overseeing needs assessments, gathering input from stakeholders to identify student and family needs.
  • Serving as a point person for potential partners and brokering new partnerships aligned with school goals.
  • Identifying high-need students, coordinating interventions with teachers, and monitoring their impact.
  • Building relationships and mechanisms to connect the school day with expanded learning opportunities.
  • Facilitating alliances with City agencies and non-profit partners to create a continuum of services for students.
  • Providing training and technical assistance to ensure cultural and linguistic appropriateness of services and communications.
  • Supporting resource management and development, including fund development and grant maintenance.
  • Coordinating space allocation for student and family support services and special events.
  • Overseeing program activities such as expanded learning time, parent/family/community engagement, mental health services, holiday/Saturday programs, and summer activities.
  • Participating in school governance, community school team meetings, and specialized meetings.
  • Assessing student and family needs, interpreting attendance policies, developing intervention strategies with school administrators, monitoring student progress, and making referrals.
  • Cultivating positive relationships with school administration, teachers, parents, and community constituents to promote programmatic quality.
  • Collaborating with Community School partners on program delivery to align with student achievement goals.
  • Establishing parent involvement in advocacy, special events, daily operations, education, and trips.
  • Promoting the Community School within the community through outreach and meeting attendance.
  • Serving as the organization's lead ambassador, creating and distributing program updates, and attending outreach events.
  • Identifying and utilizing community resources, including other schools, libraries, and government agencies.
  • Keeping supervisor informed of site information and challenges.
  • Ensuring program compliance with DOE and DOHMH regulations, timelines, and pandemic management requirements.
  • Monitoring program compliance, including student registration, ratios, attendance tracking, IDs, and virtual learning.
  • Ensuring student attendance data is collected and delivered to the Data Department weekly.
  • Verifying that new hires have completed necessary pre-employment steps (DOE background clearance, training, HR paperwork).
  • Ensuring accurate and timely submission of timesheets to Payroll.
  • Maintaining accurate records (staff files, program flyers, materials, schedules, curriculum).
  • Reporting site injuries and immediately communicating incidents with school and New York Edge personnel.
  • Ensuring budgetary compliance and timely submission of reports to funding sources.
  • Tracking and maintaining equipment and supplies.
