About The Position

Under general supervision, develops, promotes, coordinates, and conducts activities and programs that educate and train the community and department members with the goal of reducing identified risk within our community. These programs and activities will include but not be limited to fire, life safety, wildfire preparedness, injury prevention and other dimensions of fire department activities.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of different ages from diverse ethnic, cultural, and social/economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with various work groups within the Fire Department and the City of Boulder.
  • Ability to present positive and professional community safety messages to the public.
  • Skills or ability to learn relevant software including Fire Aside, the National Digital Car Seat Check form, ESRI, ArcGIS, Survey 123, and Microsoft Office.
  • Skills at an excellent level in interpersonal relations including verbal and written communication and well-developed listening skills.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid drivers' license.
  • Must successfully pass a background check before first day of work and maintain acceptable screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to read, write, and speak bilingually in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of methods in youth and adult learning.
  • Knowledge of social and human services programs and agencies in the area.
  • Experience working within a fire department, emergency services organization, or other public safety agency.
  • Public relations training or experience.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a highly visible, interactive and enthusiastic representative of Community Risk Reduction programs and services.
  • Conducts community outreach and education activities related to fire and life safety, wildfire mitigation, injury prevention, emergency preparedness and other identified community risks.
  • Conducts wildfire Detailed Home Assessments and other wildfire preparedness assessments to help residents identify opportunities to reduce wildfire risk.
  • Performs child passenger safety inspections and education.
  • Conducts home safety visits and provides education and resources to older adults, people with disabilities and other populations with access and functional needs.
  • Supports injury prevention initiatives, including falls prevention, CarFit events, and other community safety programs.
  • Participates in community events, neighborhood meetings, homeowner association meetings, school programs, and other outreach opportunities to increase community awareness of risk reduction strategies.
  • Coordinates, schedules and delivers age-appropriate and audience-specific educational programs designed to promote fire and life safety, wildfire preparedness, injury prevention, emergency preparedness and risk reduction strategies.
  • Selects, adapts, and delivers evidence-informed educational materials, presentations, and outreach resources to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Collects, documents, and maintains program data and records to support program evaluation, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provides input and field-based observations to support Community Risk Assessments (CRA) and helps identify emerging risks, community needs, and opportunities for risk reduction.
  • Supports the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Community Risk Reduction programs based on identified community needs and department priorities.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with fire department personnel, city departments, schools, social service agencies, community organizations, healthcare providers, homeowner associations, and other stakeholders to advance risk reduction efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
