About The Position

Based at the Goldboro Gold Project site in Goldboro, Guysborough County, this exciting opportunity is for a Community Relations Co-op Student to join the NexGold team, reporting to the Manager, Community Relations or designate. The Community Relations Co-op Student will support community engagement activities, events, communications, and administrative functions for the Community Relations team at the Goldboro Gold Project. This role will require regular travel within Nova Scotia and occasional evening and weekend work. NexGold is committed to advancing economic reconciliation and supporting Mi'kmaq participation in all phases of the Goldboro Project. NexGold is committed to hiring locally within Guysborough County. Requirements

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary co-op program in Public Relations, Community Studies, Indigenous Studies, Business Administration, Communications, Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Environmental Studies, or related fields of study;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Comfortable engaging with the public with effective interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail;
  • Interest in community relations, Indigenous engagement, and rural community development;
  • Willingness to learn about stakeholder and Indigenous engagement best practices;
  • Cultural awareness and willingness to learn about Mi’kmaq culture and protocols;
  • Valid driver's license (equivalent to “N5” or “N” in Nova Scotia);
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communication tools such as Canva;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a hybrid work environment;
  • Access to reliable transportation as needed;
  • Willingness to travel regularly within Nova Scotia to perform work duties;
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends for community events;
  • Meets the eligibility criteria for grant program funding: Be enrolled in a co-op post-secondary school program; Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or Protected Person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and Legally entitled to work in Canada and according to relevant Nova Scotia legislation and regulations.

  • Lived experience and understanding of Mi’kmaq culture and rural communities in Nova Scotia is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support outreach, relationship-building and communication with local residents, community organizations, Mi’kmaq communities, Indigenous organizations, and other stakeholders;
  • Assist in planning, organizing logistics, and attending community meetings, events, workshops, and engagement sessions;
  • Participate in community visits and engagement activities alongside other NexGold staff as required;
  • Help prepare community-facing materials such as newsletters, presentations, and fact sheets;
  • Attend and support Indigenous-led events (ex. Powwows) with other staff members as required;
  • Draft correspondence, meeting notes, summaries, and internal reports;
  • Maintain stakeholder contact lists, update engagement databases, and track metrics;
  • Conduct background research on community issues, local interests, and project topics;
  • Liaise with other departments to support timely completion of tasks;
  • Perform administrative duties including scheduling and file management;
  • Provide on-site support during community engagement activities;
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to Safety, Health, and Environmental responsibilities;
  • Regular regional travel (i.e., day trips to communities surrounding the Goldboro Gold Project and within Nova Scotia); and
  • Additional responsibilities or tasks as reasonably assigned
