About The Position

Sage House is a non-judgmental space for street involved sex workers. We foster an environment of safety, pro-choice, and acceptance with a focus on health accountability. We recognize that our participants come to us with a variety of complex needs and gifts, therefore we respond with cultural safety, an open door and an emphasis on human rights using a strength-based approach. We never lose sight of our participants’ needs and voices and therefore we inclusively advocate with them to support their lives direction. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Outreach Worker will offer early intervention for women involved in the sex trade through empathetic first response street level engagement through outreach services. The worker will also provide referrals and transitions to other services, continue to build/consolidate partnerships with a wide variety of stakeholders, and provide preventative activities such as education in the community. The worker will also be expected to staff the drop-in, and attend all programs and department staff meetings and relevant Mount Carmel Clinic committees, In addition, the incumbent will be required to perform household duties on a rotating basis or as needed basis. This includes but is not limited to laundry services, food preparation, and cleaning.

Requirements

  • Must have a Valid Drivers’ License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in community, preferably with program target population
  • Experience providing outreach with hard to reach populations
  • Proven knowledge and ability in critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, and crisis management
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and focus work-related activities to effectively and efficiently achieve service goals and produce expected results/outcomes
  • Commitment to the principles that guide Mount Carmel Clinic, as reflected in the history, vision, mission and values
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions and the impact of colonization on the health and well-being of Indigenous individuals and families
  • Proven ability to work within an interdisciplinary team environment with respect, professionalism, cooperation, sensitivity and cultural awareness
  • Strong knowledge, commitment and demonstrated ability to apply diversity, equity, cultural safety, pro-choice, social determinants of health, population health, harm reduction, trauma-informed and community development principles in all aspects of the work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficiency in the use of computer systems
  • Gender is a bona fide occupational requirement: this position is open to self-identifying female applicants only
