About The Position

Working at Poudre Libraries is about being part of a dynamic organization that is transforming the community and having fun along the way. You’ll be instrumental in helping our library customers connect to the ideas, information, and resources that spark their curiosity and support lifelong learning. More than 1 million people come through our doors each year and tens of thousands more access important library services online and through our outreach efforts, making the Library District – and its staff – an indispensable public resource. Come check us out! This is a temporary, seasonal position for summer. The position will tentatively start on June 15, 2026 and will end on August 30, 2026. This is a great opportunity if you are interested in dipping your toes into the world of Community Outreach at Poudre Libraries! As the Community Outreach Library Assistant, you will actively provide library resources, programs, and services, primarily outside of the library branches, to culturally diverse and underserved populations throughout the District. You will plan and implement programs and provide programming support.

Requirements

  • Must possess excellent customer service experience and skills, including deescalating difficult patrons and navigating occasional volatile situations.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a diverse population, co-workers, and supervisor.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer technologies and applications including internet, email, file management, collaboration software, translation services, and other digital applications.
  • Ability to operate and perform basic troubleshooting of digital tools including PCs, tablets, keyboards, printers, and connecting cables.
  • Ability to provide clear guidance and appropriate help to customers with technology-based questions and needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor working with customers, coworkers, and the community.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
  • Ability to safely operate the Outreach Vehicle, follow traffic laws, and maintain sufficient charge status to travel to and from all locations scheduled for the day.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including night and weekend shifts.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, speak, and communicate in English fluently is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and skills in adult, teen, and children’s literature and media preferred.
  • Experience working with children, including knowledge of child development and ability to manage and engage children strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read, speak, and communicate in Spanish fluently is desirable.
  • Conversational ability in other languages is desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is desirable.
  • One year of library or related customer service experience plus technical knowledge and experience using downloadable materials is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Creates a welcoming environment for all customers and staff that fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect, and value individual differences.
  • Demonstrates tactful and conscientious service to people of all ages, races, abilities, cultures, and genders.
  • Routinely provides direct customer service in person, via telephone, and electronically.
  • Provides digital literacy instruction and customer assistance with computers and digital technologies including tablets, printers, mobile devices, scanners, projectors, and other variously-formatted materials.
  • Provides readers’ advisory to customers.
  • Frequently uses new technology in daily duties and to support patrons with new software, hardware, and mobile devices.
  • Creates, plans, and implements informative and relevant public programs for young children, adults, older adults, and any other identified priority group.
  • Drives the Outreach Vehicle to predetermined destinations, assists library patrons, maintains library materials and records, and assists in special activities and programs presented by the Library.
  • Performs circulation duties such as registration and renewal of customers’ accounts, checking library materials in and out, collecting fees, customer registration, and issuing library cards.
  • Performs collection maintenance duties including tidying and shelving.
  • May participate in library teams, committees, and other project-based groups.
  • May oversee and direct the work of volunteers.
  • Helps to maintain safety, security and healthy environments in the library.
  • Responds to facility hazards and emergencies according to protocols.
  • Stays current on Poudre Libraries policies, processes, procedures, events, and technologies required to perform work duties.
  • Participates in training and continuing education as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
